Genre Essay

Are As Project was an introduction to a film of the War Genre and involved a missing soldier. Similar to films in the war genre are film was realistic to the time period in which it is set. As I storyline and structure to are video was similar to real events and to other war films. Are misi- en-scene was also realistic to real events. Every film made in this genre follows the same structures for the story as such war films aimed to me realistic and often remake real events from such Wars as WW1 and WW2. Whatever time period a War film is set in to keep the realism the misi en scene is realistic to that time period from the costumes to natural lighting. Throughout are planning for the video we had to research the History of the time period are film was set in to make sure the misi-en-scene is historically correct. We also did the same for the story as well as looking at other films in the war genre. We saw from such research that the storyline and structures of war films have not changed much through time only the quality of the effects this is, as all war films such as the one we made were made historically correct. The variation in the genre of war comes from the different time period as it affects the storylines, location, characters, misi-en-scene etc. Today due to events in Afghanistan most war films made today are based on events around Afghanistan but the same as every other war film are realistic and based on real events. Today’s War films have much more modern techniques and technology for the camera work and editing which adds more to the film making have more of an impact on the audience. Unlike older war films today’s war films focus a lot on relationships between people as well as the war as this adds more and if these people die it has a bigger effect on the audience. For example throughout Saving Private Ryan a relationships builds between the soldiers and you learn more about them as the film goes on. We in cooperated this into are film showing the wife of the soldier in the film and her reaction to the letter informing her husband is missing. Also dissimilar to older war films some of today’s films follow the country, which were seen and are seen as the bad guys in the war. For example Valkrie, which follows the German events in World War 2.
I think that the genre of war has repeated itself throughout time with the structure at storyline of the films, however the modern techniques and technology are needed to draw in a modern audience. Variation of the stories in today’s war films such as a focus on relationships as draw in a modern audience. War Films will also aim to be realistic and historically correct but other details will change as the demands of an audience change.

Update- First Draft Finished

We have finished are first draft of the video ahead of schedule and we were able to get feedback from other pupils. From the feedback we found two faults, we needed more range of shots like close ups in the band performance of the instruments. We also found that are band performance could do with some livening up with lights, smoke etc. In the feedback the good points that came out included lip-syncing and the story are video portrays.

Finished Filming

We have know finished our filming now, we stuck to the storyboard for all shots however while shooting we often came up with more shots so we would have as wide a range as possible of shots to make editing easier.

Health and Safety

We had to ensure that all are locations for filming were safe of hazards. For example when filming in the graveyard we must ensure that were are character runs is clear of all obstacles. Other than the graveyard are other location are not hazardous.

Target Audience

By looking at a number of reviews for Yellow card and their albums we found that punk pop has become very mainstream so this shows are target audience. As the song is punk pop are video will appeal to the same age as all of Yellowcards songs 15 to 20 years old. Are target audience includes both sexualities but not all ethnicities. The social class of the target audience is bigger ranging from A to D. The target audience for Yellowcard is the main audience for music as at that young age youths are often have money for albums and for concerts. With are video we are not looking to change the target audience from one a big as they already have.

Costume Research

From research into are band and other bands of the same genre we found that they had similar style, Which is jeans, t-shirt, trainers. From this we decided on are costumes and what each of are band members should wear.

The Fray-Over My Head

Over My Head is The Fray’s debut single for there debut album How to Save a Life in 2005. It was this song that started the bands long and successful career. The song was written by the lead singer Isaac Slade’s and is about his relationship with his brother as it is thought that they had not speaking and at odds with each other. The music video was directed by Elliott Lester and was filmed on July 24, 2005 at East High School and Fox theatre in Boulder, Colorado. The video shows the band to be children, who attract the attention of other children by playing various instruments. Micah Slade, the youngest brother of Isaac Slade plays the part of Isaac in the video.

The visuals in the video link to the lyrics of the song as the song is about the relationship between brothers and follows the youngest one find new friends but wants to fixes things with his brother. And through some the song the young brother is singing the lyrics at various points. Everything that is said in the song has an impact on what happens in the video with it linking to he lyrics. There is a band performance as well as a story; the same emotions are shown on the lead singers face as the young brother as the song involves Isaac.

At the start of the song the shots are quiet long staying with the tempo of the music and pick up during the chorus. Throughout the video the focus is on the young brother and the Isaac the lead singer. There are no close-ups of the rest of the band only of there instruments. The shots are relatively simple as to follow the story however at the start the guitarists are shown plucking their instruments into the amps. The clothes of that are typical of a band of there genre, jeans and shirt and the young brother is wearing a school uniform that has been customize which is typical for boys of that age. The video is not really to promote but to tell a story of Isaac life. When the young brother is walking through the corridor on the walls and lockers are the lyrics to the song this shows this is what the young boy is thinking about. The misi en scene is kept simple like having naturalistic lighting and the set quite dull; this is to tell the story without there being distractions. At the end of the song when the young boy is in a old looking school hall the camera spins round and the hall changes to a actual band performance that has been shown throughout before changing back to a school hall.

This video is similar to most other bands is this genre having a band performance and a story in the video and linking the visuals with the lyrics. Also much like other bands they song is about something that’s happen in their life.
Overall the video for Over My Head is not used to promote the band but to tell a story. It is common for a band of this genre to do this and have both a story and a band performance in there video. The visuals like other bands link to the lyrics. The camera shots and editing have been kept simple helping people to understand the audience. The camera shots that are used are on either the lead singer or the young boy as it is the lead singer involved in the story.

Synopsis

The song we have chosen is called Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard. The song describes one man's struggle to find his one true love.

At the start of each verse, the aim for our team is to show that the main characters are in love, Also with showing the love scenes they will be in different clothes, this indicates that they have been together for a long time.

Just before the chorus the female character always disappears from the main male character. This part of the song shows that he is trying to find the one he loves so a change of pace in the visual part with more transitions to show that something is wrong.

At the end, the audience finds out that the male character is only remembering his times with his girlfriend who has in fact past away. We are trying to send the message that there aren't always happy endings.

With the story going on the band will also be in the video. The story cuts back to the band performing.

Ocean Avenue - Lyrics

There's a place off Ocean Avenue
Where I used to sit and talk with you
We were both 16 and it felt so right
Sleeping all day, staying up all night
Staying up all night

There's a place on the corner of Cherry Street
We would walk on the beach in our bare feet
We were both 18 and it felt so right
Sleeping all day, staying up all night
Staying up all night

If I could find you now things would get better
We could leave this town and run forever
Let your waves crash down on me and take me away

There's a piece of you that's here with me
It's everywhere I go, it's everything I see
When I sleep, I dream and it gets me by
I can make believe that you're here tonight
That you're here tonight

If I could find you now things would get better
We could leave this town and run forever
I know somewhere, somehow we'll be together
Let your waves crash down on me and take me away

I remember the look in your eyes
When I told you that this was goodbye
You were begging me not tonight
Not here, not now
We're looking up at the same night sky
And keep pretending the sun will not rise
Be together for one more night
Somewhere, somehow

If I could find you now things would get better
We could leave this town and run forever
I know somewhere, somehow we'll be together
Let your waves crash down on me and take me away

YellowCard- Ligt Up The Sky

Light up The Sky was yellwocards first single in their album Paper Walls. This is in the pop funk genre the same as there previous songs. It was made for the 2007 series of Heroes and has lyrics that link to the TV series as well as being used for the TV series One Tree Hill.
The visuals of the video do not have a direct link to the lyrics. The main link between visuals and lyrics is the sky is dark and surrounding too, with the song about him trying to “Light Up the Sky”. This title has deeper meaning and is about a relationship and how the guy who in this case is the lead singer is trying to do all he can to make the girl happy. During the chorus when he says “Light Up The Sky” there are parts in the sky that light up momentarily. In the video however there is no girl shown but a group of people that are almost zombie like who he is trying to help. At the end of the video the sky opens up bringing colour onto the people making them happy and lively.
The tempo of cuts throughout the video stays to the beat of the music slowing and speeding up as the beat does. For the first few seconds of the video the focus is on the lead guitarist as he plays a solo. As each member of the band joins in it shows him or her as they start playing or singing. However there are no solos other than the lead guitarist at the beginning. Throughout the video the actions in the video speed up and slow down as the music does. For example towards the end as the music slows down the people slow their movements as they look to the sky when the colour falls from the sky. A lot of the film focuses on the bands performance with a lot of close-ups of the lead singing. There facial expression promotes the band to be caring for other people and problems that occur in the real world. This video is very similar to their other videos with a story-taking place at the same time as a band performance cutting between each one they are also giving of the same image as there other videos.

The camera work is relatively simple types of shots with a few clever shots like a point of view shot when one of the people looks up at the sky with a telescope. Also throughout there are other shots showing the band or the people through pits of the rumble. Throughout the video some of the shots are blurred creating a mysterious atmosphere at the beginning. The editing is relatively simple throughout the video with the odd effect like what happens in the sky and the odd blurred shot. The costumes of the band are there usual wear to create the same image. The clothing of the people creates a dark atmosphere to match the surroundings.

This video is not only similar to theirs but to other bands of the same genre. As a lot of bands similar like to create mysterious videos and have weird videos that people will remember. Also similar to other bands the video is partly performance based and partly concept based.

Overall this video is similar to most of their other videos with a performance of their band a story. The video mainly promotes their band to look caring towards issues in the real world and keeping the same image of a typical pop funk band. The camera shots and editing is relatively simple with the odd effect. There are not much links between visuals and lyrics apart from the chorus and what happens to the sky.

Textual Analysis- How To Save A Life

How To Save A Life is the fray’s biggest hit so far in their career, it is the main track from their debut album, How To Save A Life. It followed the song over my head. It stay as number one for up too 15 weeks in some charts and was the first of their songs to have great success in many countries such as America, Australia and Sweden. How To Save A Life is the same as all their other songs as being in the same genre, which is rock. The song was written by Isaac Slade who came up with the song after an experience he had working with troubled teens. There has been a few versions of the music video this one is the latest made in 2006. It was directed by Mark Pellington who is known for his work on the “Jeremy” music videos among others. The video features kids at the age of around 12-18. They appear to of loosed a loved one and are grieving and seem very suicidal. The whole video is in a white room with words appearing of dark meaning like “Death”. The band plays in the same room as all the kids.

The relationship between lyrics and visuals is illustrated. This is evident throughout the film as all the kids are showing the same emotions that are coming from the lyrics. It is also shown through the words that appear that seem to be what the kids are thinking of. Most shots are concentrated on the kids and not band with various shots used like close ups to show tears.

The tempo of the shots stays the same as the pace of the music. Some shots are blurry to match the kid’s confused state of mind this is also shown with a short time of really quick cuts from one shot too another.

The image of the fray is not promoted in this video it is more of a video with a message in it and to show the meaning of the song. This is common in this genre to not always promote as bands in the rock genre are normally about the music. The mise-en-scene helps to show the story and the emotions of the kids. Some of the kid’s pictures up of people, which are the people, they have loosed. A chair is used a one point showing a girl that is shrunken jumping of the chair, this also shows her state of mind and how she feels without her loved one.

Towards the end of the video the kids begin to smile and the shots show them comforting each other and kissing the photos of there loved ones this matches the songs ending as the beats more up. Throughout the band show the same emotions as the kids who promotes them as nice guys that generally care about issues in the real world. This video involves not much in the editing or the camera shots but the actor’s emotions and the mise-en-scene.

In conclusion the video for How To Save A Life does not promote the band for sales but shows the band to be nice guys that care about issues in the real world, and there aim of there video is to get a message across. They have done this through the mise-en-scene and the emotions of the actors. This video is successful in what The Fray wanted to achieve in both interesting to watch and the message they get through.
Me and my group Joseph Shaw, Sam Jordan and Zac Colon have decided to do a music video for the song Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard

Health and Safety

Before filming we had to fill in a table which listed all the possible hazards we may face and how high a level of dangerous they were. As we were filming in the Great Park we knew there would be a few hazards like roots sticking out of the ground that someone may trip over. So we made sure that were are main character ran was clear. As we were using real organs we used rubber gloves so we did not get anything harmful on us. Then after using the organs we made sure we was are hands.

Props

These are some of the guns that we have researched, that soldiers would have used when they went to war we will try and find something as close to these guns as possible. A gun like this would add so much more realism to our film and also help for fill the genre of our film 'War'.

Question 7

Looking back at are preliminary task i think we have learned alot. I think we spent alot longer on the storyboarding making shore it would attract are target audience. For are casting we also made sure that it would atract are target audience. Unlike are preliminary task we did alot of research into war films so that we would have realistic costumes and probes. During are filming i think we were much more inventive than during the preliminary task with comeing up with more shots that would look better. I think we were also more aware of lighting and checked the effects it had on the shot and do something about it. I feel are editing turned out alot better due to many reasons. Firstly are shots were of better qualilty which made it easier, i transaction between each shot whats mcuh smoother and most of are editing is invisble. We did not have music in are preliminary task but i think it went well and links well to are piece. Over all I think we have improve hugely on are preliminary task for taking more time on everything to improve the quality on both the narrative structure and the shots we used.

Question 6

We used a wide range of equipment and technology for the filming and editing of are opening senquence. We used a dv camera mounted on a tripod when shooting the film. We transfered are footage onto a macbook where we used final cut to edit it. I learnt how to cut peices of footage and put effects on them. For example i learnt how to put a transaction from one shot too another. For are music we used garage band and i learnt how to put music together and import it into final cut and change the level of volume for each note of the music. For are credits we used live type to make them and i learnt not only how to make them but how to and effects and import them into fianl cut. We also used the mac to make are letter as it had the type of writing found on a actual missing in action letter.

Question 5

Through assesing the war genre using other films and looking at the percentage of females and males watching war films and through the results of are questionaire we found that are target audience would be males. So during the storyboarding process we made sure it would attract are audience by having an event full opening senquence. For are casting are first hurdle was to find a girl that is young and realtively attractive as this would apeal to are audience. We had know problem finding three males to be the soldiers. For all are characters we needed costumes which were realistic to what was used in the 1940's. But we manage to find sufficient costumes for all characters. We managed also to get the right make up for realism with organs and blood for Jack the soldiers that dies. And for the rest we covered are main character in mud also for realism. We knew that guts and a explosion would atract a male audience like ares.

Question 3

If are film was to be produced we would need a big media institution like Sony, as for are war film to be realistic to real events we would need alot of money for special effects. They could also distribute are film and promote in many countries as war films are popular in many countries like america. Sony are experienced in advertisment and would be able to advertise ares through tv adverts, posters, billboards, internet adverts etc, and be able to target are target audience. They have done this with other big films like Qauntum of Solace.

Question 2

In are opeing senquence we have four characters. The first character is a soldiers who delivers a letter to a housewife who is shown to be very emotional and caring this is shown in her the tear drop shows she was crying and she remains emotional throughout the film after reading that her husband is missing in action who is the main character called Zac who has escaped from a prison in Dachau and is shown to be a brave soldier to the audience. We know that the wife is a housewife from her costume and the duster in her hand and also how tidy the house is shows shes been cleaning, this is a stereotypical representation of women in those days. The forth character is a fellow ally who dies from and explosion and the audience is position to feel sad of the loss. We show the soldiers how soldiers were seen in that day and these days which is that they are seen as Hereos. The soldiers in are opening senquence were young and like real events most of them ended up dieing. In are piece the soldiers are all male and the only women is a housewife which is a stereotypical representation of women in those days. There are two nationalities involved British and the Germans than caused the explosion. And we show the British to be the good guys and the Germans the bad guys. All are characters are shown to be caring of the well being of others through there facial expressions and dialogue and are soldiers to be brave. Are music also put the audience into feeling sad about what happens to the British soldier who dies through the sadness of the music. Are opening senquence somes up war that it effects everyone even remotley involved and soldiers were seen as hereos wether they died or not.

Evaluation- Question 1

Are opening sequence is typical of any other film of the war genre. Like most films of the war genre are main character is on the Allies side fighting against the Germans. And like most war films the Germans are shown to be the bad guys in are opening sequence. Typical to most war films we have young characters so not only is it realistic but it has a bigger effect on the audience if one of them dies. Similar to most war films and research into the war are film is set it a forest and field area because like most other war films we want it realistic to how it was in real life. Are storyline involves one soldier giving a housewife a letter telling her that her son is missing in action but then you see her son is alive and finds another soldier that dies. We think this created a storyline right from the beggining and got straight into some action as well, this is typical of a war genre to have simple story line that are easy to follow and having alot of action being key to a good war film but was realistic to events that would of happened in a war. Are probes like most other war films are realistic to what was used in real life which we found out through are reaseacrh into the war and the war genre. For example we used clothing that soldiers and housewifes would have used along with realistic guns and other smaller probes like a missing in action letter. We used music throughout are piece to create the atomsphere we wanted wether it was sad or tension building which is typical of any other war film. All these what we did was similar to other war films like saving private ryan, A Bridge to Far etc.

Gun

This is the gun which we used as a prop for our piece. It is the closest we could find to what was actually used in the real war. This is key to enchance realism.

Too Late The Hero- Opening Senquence

In the opening senqueunce of too late the hero it goes straight into credits. And has the credits come up with the Britsh, American and Korean flag in the background and then for the rest of the credits all three are at the side of the shot becoming more worn and ragged the further into the credits and there is a forest in the background. It then cuts to and office scene were they an officer is trying to find a american soldier. The audience are introduce to an american soldier called Lawson who is the only main chracter introduced in the opening senquence. The audience is positioned to like him as he is on the allies side which is in most cases would be the audiences side. During the begin in the background of the credits is a forest all throughout them which is showing were the action is going to take place. As it then cuts to the first scene which is situated in a forest area. In the opening senquence there is a pan across the forest during the credits and then a wide range of shots used like master shot, medium close ups etc with a fast tempo of cuts between them in the office scene creating a hetic atmosphere. The credits fade in and out throughout. The music during the credits is very up beat and heroic similar to most war films. It involves alot of violins, drums and many perucussion intruments. As the flags get more worn and ragged the music gets a lower which symbolises the reality of war. The credits are bold white and a old fashion type of writing. The flags show not only the countries involved but them getting worn and ragged during the credits shows the effect war has on countries and everyone involved. The opening sequence will make the audience what answers to questions like who is Lawson what do the army need him for and what will happen next. This is important as it makes the audience want to keep watching.

Posted First Draft

After finishing the first draft there were a few parts we needed to improve.
  • Make the tear drop more obvious.
  • Do not end a shot on a zoom out
  • More close ups needed
  • Credits need to be longer
  • Sound transitions needed to be sorted out

Logo

Costume

Through are assessing the war genre and war itself we were able to put together a realistic costume like the one above.

Dog Tags

Dog Tags were used in the war to identify the soldiers so we used them to enchance realism.
